The Swiss Pickleball Association Introduces a DUPR Rating: What Does This Mean for Me?

Perhaps you've already heard about it at your club, during tournament registration, or in the Pickleball app: DUPR is becoming increasingly important in Swiss Pickleball.

The Swiss Pickleball Association is adopting DUPR as its official rating system and is increasingly integrating it into Swiss play. But what exactly is a DUPR rating? How is it calculated? And do you now have to play tournaments every weekend just to be able to participate?

First, the good news: DUPR is not meant to make Pickleball more complicated. It is intended to help organize fairer games, find suitable opponents, and make your own development visible.

What is a DUPR Rating?

DUPR stands for Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating.

It is a personal number that aims to reflect your current skill level. While terms like beginner, intermediate, advanced, or pro are often interpreted differently, DUPR offers a standardized and internationally comparable evaluation.

New players start as NR, meaning "Not Rated." As soon as valid results are recorded, you receive an initial rating on a scale from 2.000 to 8.000.

DUPR maintains two separate values:

• a rating for singles
• a rating for doubles

This is sensible, as singles and doubles place different demands on fitness, positioning, tactics, and teamwork.

The more current games recorded in your profile, the more meaningful and stable your rating will be.

How is the DUPR Rating Calculated?

The exact DUPR algorithm is constantly evolving. However, it doesn't simply count how many games you win or lose.

Among other things, the following factors are included:

Your Performance in Relation to Expectation

Before a match, the system calculates an expected outcome based on existing ratings.

If you play better than expected, your rating can improve. If you play weaker than expected, it can decrease.

This also means: a narrow loss against significantly stronger opponents can be more indicative than a clear win against a much weaker team.

The Skill Level of Your Opponents

A result is always considered in conjunction with the ratings of all involved individuals. Thus, the same result can be evaluated differently depending on the opponent constellation.

The Type of Match

Official club and tournament results carry more weight than self-entered recreational games. This gives controlled and verified results greater importance.

The Recency of Results

Newer games have more influence than very old results. Your rating should reflect your current skill level as much as possible, not the form you had several years ago.

The Number of Your Games

With each additional result, the system receives more data. A rating after a single match is therefore less meaningful than a rating based on regular games against different people.

Rating and Ranking Are Not the Same

This distinction often causes confusion.

A rating describes your estimated skill level. It answers the question:

How strong am I playing currently?

A ranking, on the other hand, shows your position within a certain competition or leaderboard. It answers the question:

What place am I in?

For a ranking, you accumulate points, for example, at Swiss Pickleball Tour tournaments, in a club leaderboard, or in a league. Someone who plays many tournaments successfully can be high in a ranking.

Your DUPR rating, however, can also change through club games, league matches, and other recorded matches. You can therefore have a high rating without being high in a particular tournament ranking. Conversely, a very active person can collect many ranking points, even if their rating is somewhat lower.

Both systems serve different purposes and complement each other.

Why is the Swiss Pickleball Association Introducing DUPR?

Pickleball is growing rapidly in Switzerland. New clubs are emerging, existing offerings are expanding, and more and more people are participating in tournaments, club evenings, and league games.

With this growth comes an increasing need for a standardized assessment of skill level.

DUPR offers several advantages:

Fairer Categories

In tournaments and league games, categories can be defined based on understandable ratings. This is intended to prevent players of vastly different strengths from competing in the same category.

More Suitable Matches

Even outside of tournaments, a rating helps find suitable playing partners. Balanced matches are usually more fun and promote skill development.

Comparability Across Clubs and Countries

A DUPR rating is not only valid within a single Swiss club. You can also use it at international tournaments or during your next Pickleball vacation.

Visible Development

Your rating shows you how your skill level develops over a longer period. However, not every small change should be overemphasized. The long-term trend is more interesting.

Unified Basis for Swiss Play

The Swiss Pickleball Association has been using DUPR since 2024 and supports its member clubs in its introduction. The rating is used, among other things, for skill-based classification and in official formats. For example, in the Swiss Pickleball Club League "The League," participating players need a DUPR rating.

What Does the Introduction Mean for Me?

For recreational players, little changes initially. You can continue to play with friends and enjoy Pickleball.

However, as soon as you want to participate in official tournaments, club leaderboards, league games, or other organized formats, your DUPR rating will become increasingly relevant.

Specifically, this means:

• You need a free DUPR account.
• Your game results can be assigned to your profile.
• Your club can directly submit official results to DUPR.
• In certain competitions, your rating may be used for category, eligibility, or seeding.
• The more regularly you play against different people, the more reliable your rating becomes.

A paid DUPR+ subscription is not necessary for the normal creation and maintenance of a rating. The basic DUPR rating can be used free of charge.

How Do I Get a DUPR Rating?

1. Create a DUPR Account

Download the DUPR app or register on the DUPR website. If possible, use the same email address and spelling of your name as on other Pickleball platforms.

This makes it easier to connect your profiles and results later.

2. Join Your Club

Search for your Swiss Pickleball club in DUPR and send a join request.

If you are an individual member of the Swiss Pickleball Association or your club does not yet use its own DUPR Club, you can search for Swiss Pickleball Association and send a request there.

3. Connect DUPR with Your Tournated Profile

The Tournated platform is used for tournaments and leagues of the Swiss Pickleball Association. Check your profile to ensure your DUPR ID or DUPR account is correctly connected.

This is the only way to uniquely link your rating, tournament registration, and results to your person.

4. Play Games and Record Results

Official tournament or club results are usually uploaded by the organization.

You can also record recreational games yourself in the DUPR app. A self-entered result is only counted when all participating players have confirmed the result.

5. Play Regularly

An initial rating can be displayed after just a few results. However, it only becomes truly meaningful when enough current matches against different opponents have been recorded.

What is the Reliability Score?

In addition to your actual rating, DUPR displays a Reliability Score between 1 and 100 percent.

This value does not describe your skill level. It indicates how reliable the existing data basis is.

A low Reliability Score can mean that:

• only a few games have been recorded
• your last results are from a long time ago
• you have mainly played against the same people
• the ratings of your fellow players are themselves still unstable

A high value means that DUPR has enough current and diverse results to assess your skill level relatively reliably.

Rating and Reliability Score should therefore always be considered together.

Do I Have to Be Afraid of My Rating Dropping?

No. A rating is not a report card or a trophy cabinet in numerical form.

It's normal for your value to move up and down. Especially at the beginning, the changes can be greater because the system first needs to learn your skill level.

Therefore, don't try to only play against supposedly weaker individuals or avoid individual results. A rating will ultimately be useful if as many real and different matches as possible are recorded.

DUPR is not meant to tell you if you are a "good" or "bad" Pickleball player. It is meant to help you find games at a suitable level.

Can I Also Enter Recreational Games?

Yes. Games outside of official tournaments can also be entered into DUPR.

However, some basic principles should apply:

• Only enter seriously played matches.
• Clarify before the game whether the result counts for DUPR.
• Use the correct names and scores.
• Ensure that all involved parties agree to the entry.
• Do not only enter selected victories.

For fair and credible play, we don't need a rating police with magnifying glass and whistle. We primarily need honest players.

What Happens if I Don't Have a Rating Yet?

No problem.

Many players start as "Not Rated." Your club can help you organize suitable games and record initial results.

The Swiss Pickleball Association also supports its clubs and members in introducing DUPR. However, for certain competitions, you should take care of it early so that your rating is available in time and connected to your Tournated profile.

Conclusion: A Common Language for Skill Level

With DUPR, Swiss Pickleball gains a standardized and internationally established basis for assessing skill level.

For you, this primarily means:

• more suitable opponents
• fairer tournament categories
• visible personal development
